Salary to Hourly: A Simple Guide
Divide your annual salary by hours per week times 52. At 40 hours a week, that is 2,080 hours a year. $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour.
That 2,080 number is the part worth remembering. It is just 40 hours a week, times 52 weeks. So if a job pays $75,000 a year and you work 40 hours a week, the hourly rate is $75,000 ÷ 2,080, which is $36.06 an hour. If you work 37.5 hours a week instead, the year is 1,950 hours, and the same $60,000 works out to $30.77 an hour — fewer hours for the same pay means more per hour.
One thing to keep in mind: the hourly rate you get this way is your gross rate, before tax. It does not include paid time off, overtime, or bonuses. If you are comparing a salaried job with an hourly one, ask about those too — two jobs with the same hourly number can pay very differently once time off and overtime are counted.
